FDI in Lithuania Grew by 20% and Lithuanian Investments Abroad Leaped 35% in 2007
The Lithuanian Department of Statistics has informed that based on provisional data as of 1 January 2008 foreign direct investment (FDI) made EUR 10 billion, or by 19.6% more than on 1 January 2007. Also, as of 1 January 2008, Lithuanian enterprises’ direct investment abroad made EUR 1.1 billion, or by 34.7% more than on 1 January 2007.
The per capita FDI equaled, on average, EUR 2.9 thousand (on 1 January 2007 – EUR 2.5 thousand). The bulk of investment fell per investors from Poland – EUR 1.8 billion (18% of the total FDI), Denmark – EUR 1.3 billion (12.9%), Sweden – EUR 1.2 billion (11.7%), Russia –EUR 967 million (9.6%), Germany – EUR 857 million (8.6%), Estonia - EUR 587 million (5.9%), Finland – EUR 515 million (5.2%), Latvia – EUR 443 million (4.4 per cent), the Netherlands – EUR 428 million (4.3%). Direct investment from the EU-27 countries made EUR 8 billion (80.3%), from the CIS countries – EUR 1 billion (10%) of the total FDI.
As of 1 January 2008, the bulk of investment fell per manufacturing – 36.3% (of which manufacture of petrol and chemical products – 23.4%), financial intermediation – 17.2%, transport, storage and communication – 12.8%, wholesale and retail trade – 11.5%, electricity, gas and water supply – 9.3%, real estate, rent and other business activities – 8.4% of the total FDI.
As of 1 January 2008, Lithuanian enterprises’ direct investment abroad made EUR 1.1 billion, or by 34.7% more than on 1 January 2007 (EUR 793 million). Most of all – EUR 312 million (29.4% of the total direct investment abroad) – was invested in Latvia, EUR 136 million (12.7%) in Russia, EUR 110 million (10.3%) in Poland, also, EUR 110 million (10.3%) in Ukraine, EUR 75 million (7.1%) in Estonia, and EUR 69 million (6.6%) in the United Kingdom. In 2007, the most obvious growth of Lithuanian enterprises’ direct investment abroad was observed in Latvia and the United Kingdom. Lithuania’s direct investment in the EU-27 countries made EUR 718 million (67.4% of Lithuania’s investment abroad), in CIS countries – EUR 260 million (24.5%).
As far as investment abroad is concerned, Lithuanian enterprises mostly invested in real estate, renting and other business enterprises – EUR 360 million (33.6% of the total direct investment abroad), manufacturing – EUR 217 million (20.3%), financial intermediation – EUR 194 million (18.2%), wholesale and retail trade – EUR 125 million (11.7%), transport, storage and communication – EUR 72 million (6.8%).
